Connect Bilance to Claude, ChatGPT and other AI apps

Updated

You can connect Bilance to an AI app you already use, such as Claude, ChatGPT or Codex. The AI app then answers questions about your own finances from your real Bilance data, and it can tidy things up for you, like recategorizing transactions or creating a budget.

Bilance uses an open standard called MCP (Model Context Protocol) for this. You sign in with your Bilance account in your browser. The AI app never sees your password or your bank login, and you can disconnect it at any time.

What you need

  • A Bilance account with an active subscription, free trial or complimentary access.
  • An AI app that can connect to remote MCP servers.

The server address

https://mcp.bilanceapp.com/mcp

This address is all an AI app needs. Signing in happens in your browser.

Connect in Claude

Claude on the web and the desktop app

  1. Open Settings → Connectors and choose Add custom connector.
  2. Name it Bilance and paste the server address above.
  3. Click Connect, sign in on the Bilance page and confirm.
  4. Start a new chat and ask about your money. Claude asks you to allow each tool the first time it uses it.

Claude Code

  1. Run claude mcp add --transport http --scope user bilance https://mcp.bilanceapp.com/mcp
  2. Start claude, type /mcp, choose bilance and then Authenticate.
  3. Sign in on the Bilance page that opens in your browser and confirm.

Connect in ChatGPT

  1. In ChatGPT’s settings, open Apps & Connectors, then Advanced settings, and turn on Developer mode. This is available on paid plans.
  2. Back in Apps & Connectors, choose Create. Name it Bilance and paste the server address above.
  3. Sign in on the Bilance page and confirm. Then ask about your money in a new chat.

Connect in Codex

  1. Run codex mcp add bilance --url https://mcp.bilanceapp.com/mcp
  2. Run codex mcp login bilance, sign in on the Bilance page and confirm.

Other AI apps

Any app that supports remote MCP servers with sign-in works the same way: add the server address, sign in on the Bilance page, and confirm. The Gemini CLI, for example, uses gemini mcp add -t http bilance https://mcp.bilanceapp.com/mcp followed by /mcp auth bilance.

What the AI app can read

The same data you see in the Bilance app:

  • accounts and balances
  • transactions, with categories, tags, notes and merchants, including a CSV export
  • spending and income summaries, monthly reports and your year in review
  • budgets and how far along they are
  • recurring payments and what is due next
  • net worth, assets and debts, and the value history of each asset

If you use Shared Finances, the AI app follows the household filter you picked in the app, and it can include accounts and transactions your partner has shared with you. Transactions on hidden accounts are left out.

What the AI app can change

When you ask it to, the AI app can:

  • edit, add, convert and delete transactions
  • create, edit and delete categories, tags, budgets and recurring payments
  • add manual accounts, and rename, hide or adjust accounts
  • add, edit and delete assets
  • change the household filter you see in the app
  • refresh your bank data, at most once a day

On a transaction your partner shares with you, it can only change the category, exclude it, star it or mark it as seen, just like in the app.

Changes are allowed by default when you connect. To turn them off for one AI app, open the Bilance app and go to Settings → Connected AI apps, pick the app and switch off Allow changes to your data. The app can then still read your data, but every change is refused. You can switch off Allow bank data refresh the same way.

Bilance never moves money

Bilance can’t make payments or transfers from your bank, and neither can an AI app connected to it. A “payment” or “transfer” the AI app creates is a record in Bilance only, the same as one you add by hand in the app.

Limits

  • 300 tool calls per day across all your connected AI apps, resetting at midnight UTC
  • 60 tool calls per minute
  • CSV exports come in pages of 500 rows; up to 3 larger pages per day
  • 1 bank data refresh per day

When you reach a limit, the AI app gets a message with the time it resets.

Things to try

  • “What did I spend on groceries last month, and how does that compare with the month before?”
  • “Which subscriptions renew this week?”
  • “How am I doing against my budgets this month?”
  • “What is my net worth right now, and which assets make up most of it?”
  • “Find all my Bolt rides and tag them as Transport.”
  • “Create a 300 euro monthly budget for eating out.”

See or disconnect your AI apps

In the Bilance app, go to Settings → Connected AI apps. Each connected app is listed with when it last used your data. From there you can switch off changes or bank data refresh for that app, or tap Disconnect to remove its access.

Disconnecting stops new requests right away. A request already in progress may still finish, which takes a few minutes at most. Some AI apps create a new connection each time you sign in, so the same app can appear more than once. Disconnect every entry you no longer want; “Last used” shows which one is active.

Privacy

Your Bilance data stays where it is today. When you ask a question, the AI app receives the answer and stores and processes it under its own terms and privacy policy, which may be outside the EEA. Bilance doesn’t control that part, so only connect AI apps you trust. Disconnecting stops future access but doesn’t delete what the AI app has already received. Read more in our privacy policy.

If something goes wrong

  • “An active Bilance subscription is required”: open the Bilance app to subscribe or restore your purchases.
  • Sign-in loops back to the same page: use a normal browser window (not private mode) and allow cookies for mcp.bilanceapp.com.
  • “Do not retry before …”: you reached one of the limits above. It resets at the time shown.
  • The AI app says it can’t change anything: check that Allow changes to your data is on for that app in Settings → Connected AI apps.
  • Numbers look different from the app: amounts are converted to your default currency and excluded transactions stay excluded, as in Bilance. Check that the household filter matches.

Still stuck? Email help@bilanceapp.com with your Bilance account email, the AI app you used and the exact message you saw.
