Bilance vs Toshl

Toshl is a flexible, manual-first budgeting app with a genuinely useful free tier; Bilance is built around automation for European banks. In Toshl, automatic bank sync sits in its top Medici plan, recurring payments are scheduled by hand, and a household shares one login that shows all data to both people. Bilance is one paid subscription with everything in it: EU/EEA bank coverage you can check before installing, automatic detection of subscriptions and bills, a built-in AI chat, and per-account sharing for two people. We make Bilance, so check every claim: each fact below comes from an official page, checked on the date above.

What Toshl does well

Toshl Finance launched in 2010 and its European account access runs through Toshl d.o.o., a Slovenian subsidiary with a PSD2 registration at the Bank of Slovenia. Its real strengths:

Where Bilance is stronger

  • Coverage you can verify first. Bilance publishes its bank list: 2,300+ banks across the EU/EEA, browsable by country before you install anything. Toshl claims about 14,000 connection types worldwide but says it cannot promise specific connections in advance, so you find out after signing up.
  • Bank sync is included, not a top tier. In Toshl, automatic bank connections require the Medici plan, above Free and Pro. Bilance has no permanent free tier: it is one subscription with bank sync, budgets, net worth and AI chat all in it, and most new users start with a full-featured trial; the exact terms are shown in the app before you pay. Toshl’s own 30-day trial asks for payment information up front.
  • Recurring payments are found for you. Bilance detects subscriptions and repeated bills in your synced transactions and tracks each one with its amount, next date and paid status, on its own screen. In Toshl, repeating entries are scheduled by hand, on Pro or Medici; its developer API can flag detected repeats, but we could not verify that appearing anywhere in the app itself.
  • Real sharing for couples. Toshl’s own FAQ says a household shares one login and sees all data, and suggests tags or separate accounts as workarounds. Bilance pairs two logins and each partner chooses which bank accounts to share, keeping the rest private.
  • An AI chat included. Bilance’s AI Chat is its own tab: ask about your spending, subscriptions or net worth and the answer comes from your own numbers. Toshl’s published pages describe no AI assistant.

One dated fact belongs in this picture: Toshl’s store listings show the last app updates in 2024 (Google Play, 2024-09-27; App Store version 3.5.13, 2024-12-13).

How we tested

We compared Bilance and Toshl across bank sync, automation, recurring payments, budgets, net worth, sharing, platforms and pricing model. Every non-Bilance fact comes from the vendor’s own website, help pages, legal documents or app store listing, opened on the date shown with that cell’s source link. Where we could not verify a point, the table shows a dash instead of a guess. Bilance behaviour was checked in the current product. We did not run hands-on device tests of Toshl for this article. The verdict is our editorial judgment, not a scored ranking, and we recheck the facts every two months.

Switching from Toshl

Toshl makes leaving easy: CSV export is included even on Free. Export your transactions, then upload the file to Bilance: it lands in a dedicated import account, with columns recognised automatically and Toshl’s category labels matched onto your own categories. Budgets and repeating entries do not travel in the file. For everything current, you connect your banks and recent transactions sync in directly, most of them categorised automatically; how far back the synced history reaches depends on each bank.

Which one is for you?

Choose Toshl if you want a capable free tool for manual tracking, budget in unusual periods with rollover, need to import OFX or Excel files, or want API access to your own data.

Choose Bilance if you want to confirm your banks are covered before you start, want subscriptions and bills detected instead of scheduled by hand, want to ask an AI chat about your own numbers, or you and your partner want a shared view of chosen accounts.

Frequently asked questions

Can I move my Toshl data into Bilance?

Yes. Export your transactions from Toshl as CSV (included in the free tier) and upload the file to Bilance: it lands in a dedicated import account, and Toshl category labels are matched onto your own categories. Your ongoing data syncs in directly from your connected banks.

Does Toshl include automatic bank sync?

Only in its top Medici plan. Toshl Free and Toshl Pro are manual-entry tiers; Pro adds features like unlimited accounts and repeating entries but not bank connections. Bilance includes bank sync in its one subscription.

Does Toshl detect subscriptions automatically?

Not in any consumer feature we could verify: you schedule each repeating entry by hand, on the Pro or Medici plans. Bilance detects subscription patterns in your synced transactions and suggests them; once you confirm, each is tracked with its amount, next date and paid status.

Can couples use Toshl together?

Only by sharing one login, which shows all data to both people; Toshl suggests tags or separate accounts as workarounds. Bilance connects two separate logins and each partner picks which bank accounts to share.
