YNAB alternatives for Europe

If you are in Europe and YNAB is not working out, the choice comes down to what you want to keep: the zero-based method, or the app. If the method is the point, Actual Budget follows it closely. If what you want is your finances tracked with your real European banks connected, Bilance is built exactly for that: automatic sync, automatic categorisation, and a built-in AI assistant. We make Bilance; the trade-offs of each option are below.
Why people look for an alternative
Three reasons come up again and again, and all three are documented by YNAB itself:
- Bank coverage. YNAB’s direct import in Europe covers 18 European markets with selected banks only, and YNAB does not promise if or when an unsupported bank will be added.
- US dollar pricing. YNAB is priced in USD, so what you actually pay in euros moves with the exchange rate.
- One currency per plan. A YNAB plan holds one currency. Money life across euros and another currency does not fit in one budget.
None of this makes YNAB a bad app. It is a deliberate US-first product with the best-known budgeting method in the world. It just leaves Europeans doing extra work.
What to check before you choose
Check your banks first. A budgeting app that cannot connect to your actual banks loses its main value on day one, whatever else it does well. Bilance publishes its full list: 2,300+ banks across the EU/EEA, browsable by country.
The realistic options
- Actual Budget is the closest to YNAB’s method: open-source, zero-based budgeting. The trade-off is that you host it yourself, and its European bank sync is documented as experimental, with syncs triggered manually.
- Wallet by BudgetBakers and Spendee are broad European trackers with bank sync behind their paid tiers. Both are compared in detail in the best budgeting apps in Europe.
- Bilance takes the opposite approach to YNAB: instead of you assigning every euro by hand, the app does the tracking. Banks sync automatically, most transactions are categorised for you and improve with corrections, subscriptions and recurring bills are detected, and budgets with monthly limits cover the categories you choose. An AI Chat answers questions from your own numbers: “where does my money go?”, “can I afford this?”. It works in 24 languages. There is no zero-based method in Bilance; if assigning every euro a job is what you loved about YNAB, you will not find that ritual here.

Switching: what happens to your YNAB history
YNAB lets you export your plan and transactions as CSV or TSV files from its web app: transaction history, categories and category groups (targets are not included). Keep that export as your archive.
Be aware that Bilance has no file import, so your YNAB history does not move in. A fresh start in Bilance works differently: you connect your banks, and your recent transaction history syncs in directly from them; most transactions are categorised automatically. How many months back the history reaches depends on each bank. The fresh start has a point of its own: the data maintains itself from day one, instead of depending on your discipline.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best YNAB alternative that works with European banks?
It depends on what you want to keep. For the zero-based method, Actual Budget follows it closely but you host it yourself. For automatic tracking with European banks connected, Bilance publishes its full bank list, syncs automatically, and categorises most transactions for you.
Can I import my YNAB history into Bilance?
No. Bilance has no file import. When you connect your banks, your recent transaction history syncs in directly from them; how far back depends on each bank. Export your YNAB data as CSV first and keep it as an archive.
Is there a YNAB alternative with zero-based budgeting in Europe?
Actual Budget is the closest: open-source zero-based budgeting. Its European bank sync requires running your own server and is documented as experimental. Bilance does not use the zero-based method; it automates tracking instead.
Is there a YNAB alternative for couples in Europe?
Yes. Bilance Shared Finances lets two people share chosen bank accounts while keeping other accounts private, so a couple sees one household picture. YNAB Together shares a full plan with up to six people instead.
Do I have to pay in US dollars for a YNAB alternative?
No. YNAB is priced in USD, but European apps such as Bilance are sold through the local app stores in your own currency.
