Mint alternatives for Europe

Mint is gone, and its official replacement never worked in Europe — but the thing people loved about Mint exists here too: an app that connects your banks and tracks spending automatically. In Europe that is what Bilance does, built on European open banking instead of US infrastructure. We make Bilance; the honest picture of the field is below.

What happened to Mint

On 31 October 2023, Intuit announced that Mint was going away and invited users to continue on Credit Karma. That migration was built for the US: the announcement’s data-download route pointed to Credit Karma’s US help center, and no equivalent European path was published. For Europeans, “Mint alternative” stopped meaning “replace Mint” and started meaning “find an automatic money tracker that actually connects to my banks”.

What made Mint work, and what to look for

Mint’s formula was simple: connect your accounts and see everything categorised in one place, for no effort. When choosing a European equivalent, check three things:

  • Your banks. European bank coverage varies a lot between apps. Bilance publishes its list: 2,300+ banks across the EU/EEA, browsable by country before you install anything.
  • Real automation. Mint’s value was never entering data by hand. Look for automatic categorisation that improves with corrections, and automatic detection of subscriptions and recurring bills.
  • The picture beyond spending. Net worth, budgets, and a monthly summary of where the money went.

The realistic options

Wallet by BudgetBakers and Spendee are established European trackers; both put bank sync behind a paid tier next to a free manual tier. Toshl Finance is a long-standing European option. Finanzguru is strong in Germany, Bankin’ in France. All of them are compared side by side in the best budgeting apps in Europe.

Bilance is the closest to the original formula, taken further: banks across the EU/EEA connect and sync automatically, most transactions are categorised for you and improve with your corrections, subscriptions and recurring bills are detected, and net worth, budgets and a Monthly report are built in. A built-in AI Chat answers questions from your own numbers: “where does my money go?”, “what do my subscriptions cost in total?”. It works in 24 languages. Bilance is a paid subscription with no permanent free tier. Most new users start with a full-featured trial; the exact terms are shown in the app before you pay. If you want a permanently free app and accept manual entry, Bilance is not that; Monefy is.

Switching: your old Mint data

If you saved a Mint export while it was still possible, keep it as your archive. Intuit’s privacy portal lets present and past customers request a download of their personal data, but it does not promise an import-ready transaction file. Bilance has no file import in any case: you connect your banks, and your recent history syncs in from them directly; most transactions are categorised automatically. How far back it reaches depends on each bank.

Frequently asked questions

What replaced Mint in Europe?

Nothing official. Intuit pointed Mint users to Credit Karma, which was built for the US market. Europeans choose from European apps instead: Bilance, Wallet by BudgetBakers, Spendee, Toshl and regional options like Finanzguru and Bankin.

Is there a free Mint alternative for European banks?

Apps with free tiers, such as Wallet and Spendee, keep bank sync in their paid plans, so the free tiers are manual. The exception is Fintonic in Spain: free with bank connections, earning through its marketplace of financial products instead.

Which app categorises transactions automatically like Mint did?

Bilance categorises most transactions automatically the moment they sync and improves with your corrections. Wallet also learns from corrections. Spendee requires Premium for automatic categorisation and documents that it does not work for banks connected through direct APIs.

Can I import my old Mint CSV into Bilance?

No. Bilance has no file import. Your recent transaction history comes directly from your connected banks instead; most transactions are categorised automatically. Keep your Mint export as a personal archive.

Is connecting my bank to a Mint-style app safe in Europe?

European open banking under PSD2 gives an app read-only access: it can see transactions and balances but cannot move money, and you approve the connection at your own bank. Check which licensed provider an app uses before connecting.
