Bilance vs YNAB

These two apps do different jobs: YNAB teaches a strict budgeting method, while Bilance automates the tracking itself. In YNAB, everything serves the method: you assign every euro a job, by hand, on purpose. In Bilance, European banks connect, most transactions are categorised for you, subscriptions are detected, and you look at a finished picture. If you want a discipline, YNAB is built exactly for that. If you want your finances tracked without the daily work, that is Bilance’s job. We make Bilance; every fact here is from an official page, checked on the date above.

What YNAB does well

YNAB has earned its reputation since 2004. Credit where it is due:

  • The method. Zero-based budgeting genuinely changes how many people handle money, and YNAB supports it with extensive courses, videos and an active community. Nothing in Bilance replaces that discipline; we solve a different problem.
  • Flexible targets. Categories and targets on weekly, monthly, yearly or custom cadences, fully editable.
  • Wide sharing. YNAB Together covers up to six people under one subscription. One caveat from its own docs: the group manager can access every member’s plan.
  • More than budgets. Net worth, debt tools and reports are included, and where direct import does not cover a bank, you can import bank files (QFX, OFX, QIF, CSV). Bilance has no file import.
  • A generous direct-signup trial. 34 days, no card required, no automatic charge.

Where Bilance is stronger for Europeans

  • Built for European banks. Bilance covers 2,300+ banks across the EU/EEA (check yours). YNAB’s direct import covers 18 European markets with selected banks only and publishes no bank count.
  • Refresh behaviour. By YNAB’s own documentation, imported transactions typically appear within 24 to 72 hours, with refreshes once or twice a day. Bilance syncs automatically when you open the app, at most every 30 minutes; actual timing varies by bank for both apps.
  • Automation as the point. YNAB’s categorisation repeats what you last chose per payee; that manual-first design is deliberate and fits the method. Bilance categorises most transactions automatically, improves with corrections, and finds your subscriptions and recurring bills for you.
  • Someone to ask about your money. Bilance’s AI Chat is built in: ask “where does my money actually go?”, “can I afford this car lease?” or “what did the summer trip cost?”, and the answers come from your own transactions, budgets and subscriptions. We could not verify a built-in assistant for YNAB; its API can feed external AI tools that you set up yourself.
  • Your language and your currency. YNAB is English-only and priced in US dollars, and one plan holds one currency. Bilance works in 24 languages, including yours.

How we tested

We compared Bilance and YNAB across bank sync, automation, budgeting method, recurring payments, net worth, sharing, platforms, languages, and pricing model. Every non-Bilance fact in the table comes from the vendor’s own website, help centre, legal documents, or app store listing, opened on the date shown with that cell’s source link. Where we could not verify a point, the table shows a dash instead of a guess. Bilance behaviour was checked in the current product. We did not run hands-on device tests of the other app for this article. The verdict is our editorial judgment, not a scored ranking, and we recheck the facts every two months.

Neither app has a permanent free tier; both are paid subscriptions. For Bilance, most new users start with a full-featured trial; the exact terms are shown in the app before you pay. And both apps’ bank connections depend on each bank’s interface quality, so sync reliability varies by bank for both.

Switching from YNAB

YNAB lets you export your plan and transactions as CSV or TSV from its web app; keep that file as your archive, because after your subscription ends the plan is no longer readable without resubscribing. Bilance has no file import, so the history does not move in. Instead, you connect your banks and recent transactions sync in directly; most are categorised automatically and improve with your corrections. How far back the history reaches depends on each bank.

Which one is for you?

Choose YNAB if the method is what you want: the habit of assigning every euro a job, the education around it, and a big shared setup. That choice comes with manual work, an English-only app and slower, selective European bank import.

Choose Bilance if you tried spreadsheets or method apps and stopped, because the daily manual work was too much to keep up. Bilance is a budgeting app that does the tracking for you across European banks and lets you spend your attention on decisions instead of data entry. When a month ends, a Monthly report and a savings rate show what actually happened, even in the weeks when you never opened the app.

Frequently asked questions

Can I import my YNAB data into Bilance?

No. Bilance has no file import. Export your YNAB plan as CSV and keep it as an archive; in Bilance, your recent history syncs in directly from your connected banks; most transactions are categorised automatically.

Does Bilance support zero-based budgeting like YNAB?

No. Bilance budgets are monthly limits for the categories you choose, with live progress and per-month overrides. There is no envelope ritual of assigning every euro a job.

Which app works with more European banks?

Bilance publishes its full list of banks across the EU/EEA, browsable by country. YNAB documents direct import for 18 European markets with selected banks only and publishes no bank count.

Can couples use Bilance and YNAB together?

Both support sharing, differently. YNAB Together shares a full plan with up to six people. Bilance Shared Finances connects two people who each choose which bank accounts to share, keeping the rest private.
