Bilance vs Monefy

Bilance and Monefy answer the same question in opposite ways. Monefy is a deliberately manual expense tracker: you type each expense yourself, and your data stays on your device or in your own Google Drive or Dropbox. Bilance connects your European bank accounts, records the transactions and categorises most of them automatically. Neither approach is wrong; they suit different people. We make Bilance; every claim below links to an official page, checked on the date above.

What Monefy does well

Monefy, by Danish company Reflective Technologies, is one of the best-known manual trackers, with 10 million or more downloads on Google Play:

  • Very fast manual entry. The core flow is amount first, then a category, and the chart updates immediately. Reviews across countries praise how quick and clean it feels.
  • Privacy by design. Monefy’s own FAQ says no bank login is required. Data is local by default; optional cloud sync stores an encrypted file in your own Drive or Dropbox account, not on Monefy’s servers.
  • A complete manual toolkit. Custom categories, multiple accounts, multi-currency, scheduled recurring entries, budgets, reports and export cover what a disciplined manual tracker needs.
  • Partner sharing across platforms. Two people can point their apps at the same Drive or Dropbox data file, and it works across iPhone and Android.

Where Bilance is stronger

  • The record completes itself. We found no bank connection in Monefy’s published pages or store listings; its own FAQ answers the question with manual entry and statement import. Your history depends on what you type in or import from statements. Bilance syncs 2,300+ banks across the EU/EEA, browsable by country before you install anything.
  • Categorisation is done for you. In Monefy’s documented flow you pick the category yourself on every entry, and no learning behaviour is documented. Bilance categorises most transactions automatically and improves with your corrections.
  • Subscriptions are found, not scheduled. In Monefy you create each recurring entry by hand and choose its frequency. Bilance detects subscriptions and repeated bills from your synced transactions and tracks them on their own screen, with amount, next date and paid status.
  • An assistant that knows your numbers. Bilance’s AI Chat answers questions about your own spending, budgets and net worth. Monefy publishes no AI feature.
  • A simpler business model. Monefy is a free core app with a paid Premium unlock; its homepage lists unlimited accounts, recurring transactions and advanced filters among the paid features. Its public pages also disagree about advertising: the help centre says the app contains “zero ad SDKs”, while the privacy policy says AdSense or AdMob may be used. We can only note the conflict. Bilance has no permanent free tier: one subscription with everything in it, and most new users start with a full-featured trial; the exact terms are shown in the app before you pay.

How we tested

We compared Bilance and Monefy across bank sync, automation, recurring payments, budgets, sharing, platforms, and pricing model. Every Monefy fact comes from the vendor’s own website, help centre, legal documents, or app store listings, opened on the date shown with each cell’s source link. A dash in the table means we could not verify that point from Monefy’s published pages; it is not proof of absence. Bilance behaviour was checked in the current product. We did not run hands-on device tests of Monefy for this article. The verdict is our editorial judgment, not a scored ranking, and we recheck the facts every two months.

One clarification on “sync”: Monefy’s cloud sync copies its own database file between your devices through your Drive or Dropbox. Fetching transactions from a bank is not part of it, and Monefy does not claim otherwise.

Switching from Monefy

Monefy’s Google Play listing confirms backup and export, and Monefy’s own guides describe CSV export. Export your history as CSV and upload it to Bilance: it lands in a dedicated import account, columns are recognised automatically, and Monefy’s category labels are matched onto your own categories. From then on you connect your banks and new transactions sync in, most of them categorised automatically; how far back the synced history reaches depends on each bank.

Which one is for you?

Choose Monefy if you actively want to type each expense yourself, you do not want to link a bank account to any app, or you want your data kept in your own cloud storage. For that job it is one of the best tools around, and entering each expense by hand keeps some people more aware of their spending.

Choose Bilance if you want the tracking done for you: accounts synced, transactions categorised, subscriptions detected, and one view of spending and net worth. Couples get a shared view of chosen accounts without handing over a whole data file. If manual tracking is the part you always stop doing after a few weeks, automation is the practical fix.

Frequently asked questions

Does Monefy connect to bank accounts?

No. The Monefy FAQ says no bank login is required and points to manual entry and statement import instead. Its cloud sync copies its own data file through your Google Drive or Dropbox; it does not fetch transactions from a bank.

Can I move my Monefy data into Bilance?

Yes. Export your Monefy history as CSV and upload the file to Bilance: it lands in a dedicated import account, columns are recognised automatically, and Monefy category labels are matched onto your own categories. Ongoing data then syncs in from your connected banks.

Which app categorises transactions automatically?

Bilance. It assigns categories to most synced transactions and improves as you correct it. In the documented Monefy flow you choose the category yourself each time you enter an expense.

Is Monefy free?

Monefy offers a free core app plus a paid Premium unlock; its homepage lists unlimited accounts, recurring transactions and advanced filters among the paid features. Bilance has no permanent free tier: it is one paid subscription, and most new users start with a full-featured trial; the exact terms are shown in the app before you pay.
